Ivory Coast Soccer team heads to Semi-Finals

The Ivory Coast soccer team continued their quest for a 2016 African Nations Championship on Saturday. The African Nations Championship, which is also known as CHAN 2016 is an international championship organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the men’s national teams in Africa. This unique tournament is being played in Rwanda and features 16 teams competing for the ultimate prize.

The Ivory Coast would go 2-1 in the group stage games and advance to the quarterfinals. For those who are unaware of the rules for the this tournament, the top two teams in each group advance.  This past weekend, the Ivory Coast would take on Cameroon in the quarterfinals. All these games going forward are win or go home, so you can be sure each of these teams will be giving everything they have out on the field. It was an incredible game, as both teams played great defense and it would force the game  to go to extra time. Once extra time kicked in, it didn’t take the Ivory Coast too long to score. Koffu Davy Mahinde ended the 0-0 score with a beautiful header from a corner kick by Yannik Zakri. Soon after, the Ivorians would add another goal to take a commanding 2-0 lead. Despite being up 2-0, the Ivory Coast would not let up on the defensive end to make sure Cameroon would not get back in the game. This was a great move by the coaching staff and would allow the Ivorians to score yet another goal and put them game away for good. It was a great for win for the Ivory Coast.

They will now take on Mali in the Semifinals with a chance to compete for African Nations Championship. The game will take place this Thursday, February, 4 and it will be a very exciting game to watch!
